Nagpur: For nearly two years, she existed without a name, a past, or a place to call home. Found in a frail and disoriented condition near Khaparkheda's PWCEN colony in Sept 2024, the young girl had a mental health condition and had no memory of who she was or where she belonged. Barely 17 at the time, her silence carried the weight of a life erased.Rescued by the Khaparkheda police, the teenager later identified as Manisha (name changed) was placed under the care of the Asha Kiran Balgruh Care and Support Center in Mhasala, Nagpur. There, she slowly recovered physically, but her identity remained a mystery. With no documents, no recollection, and no leads, her case stood as a quiet reminder of how easily someone can slip through the cracks. Yet, the search for her identity never stopped.Caregivers at the shelter, along with authorities, continued their efforts, holding on to the hope that one day, Manisha would find her way back home. That breakthrough came on April 17, through an unlikely but powerful tool — Aadhaar.Using the biometric-based ‘Find Aadhaar' feature available through the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) portal, officials conducted a thumbprint verification. The system matched her biometric data with an existing Aadhaar record from Uttar Pradesh. What once seemed like an untraceable case suddenly had a name, a family, and a destination.The verification was formally authenticated, setting in motion the process of reconnecting Manisha with her roots. Officials involved described the moment as deeply moving as it changed a long-standing uncertainty into a story of hope and closure.The superintendent of Asha Kiran Balgruha expressed gratitude to UIDAI, the police, and all authorities who worked tirelessly on the case. "This is more than identification, it is restoration of a life," the official said.With support from the Child Welfare Committee and legal authorities, arrangements are now underway for Manisha's safe return to her family. For the first time in two years, her journey has a direction.Beyond one girl's story, the case sheds light on the larger role of Aadhaar in bridging gaps in identity, especially for the vulnerable and forgotten.
